Grazia UK - a live fashion issue

‘Grazia Fashion Issue…Live!’ will be the first truly interactive, social experiment ever undertaken by a print product – accessible across all Grazia’s platforms, including graziadaily.co.uk, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. (release)

And this is the reason it's among my posts. It is clear to me lately that 'episodes' is the... new black for fashion reporting. However this is the first time an international title of this scale is "handing over the editing reins to fans by giving them the chance to comment, influence and vote on the editorial selection process in a live, social publishing event – even down to the cover shot".

The 'episodes' will be daily films featuring behind-the-scenes insights on both NY and London Fashion Weeks. These are expected to go live on February 13th at graziadaily.co.uk and the whole project, shaped by readers' votes and online commenting, will result to a 264 page issue out on stands on February 21st.

It was clear that fashion reporting would never be the same since the first fashion blogger sat on the front row. This is much bigger though, regardless of who's brave enough to take the first bite. I am so looking forward to the outcome. And what's to follow / who's to follow it.

Yiorgos Eleftheriades held his show for a/w 2013 yesterday, on schedule at 080 Barcelona Fashion Week. Themed 'In Search of Poetry', the show consisted of both womens and menswear created in tweed, pinstriped wool and cashmere, leather and fur. No doubt, a collection that makes you want to fast forward the calendar.

I found this very interesting piece of writing by Brooklyn-based author Elizabeth Cline at The Etsy Blog. It was published back in May '11 but it will be relevant for months to come. Here's an extract:

"We now only make 3% of our apparel in the United States, down from 90% in 1955. The prices of these imports are so low that we have long since abandoned our sewing machines and deserted our dressmakers. Our clothes have also become increasingly casual and simplified, another reason for lower price tags.

As clothes have become cheaper, our clothing consumption has gone through the roof. In 1930, the average American woman owned an average of nine outfits. Today, we each buy more than 60 pieces of new clothing on average per year. Our closets are larger and more stuffed than ever, as we’ve traded quality and style for low prices and trend-chasing".

Mi lajki / Style Factory - episodes

On February 1st, and during Swedish Fashion Week, Mi lajki's Style Factory begins the quest for a shiny styling star. Mi lajki is a Swedish creative community on a mission 'to make the world more colourful'. Nine international contestants have been assigned to bring forward unique interpretations of their stories in three different Mi lajki themes. It will all unravel in a series of 10 online episodes* and the winner gets to walk out with a 50.000 euro* contract to create his own jewelry collection. 50% of the vote will come from the judges whereas the other half by the viewers. *'online episodes, 50.000 euro prize, contract' is becoming a pattern for the Swedish Fashion Week this season. Following the process via online episodes is a new reality too. Much awaited Bread & Butter Berlin tradeshow kicks off tonight with a 'high voltage' opening party. Being already established as one of the top trendsetting exhibitions, it will be once again welcoming visitors from all over the world between the 18th and 20th January 2012. This season's theme is "High Fidelity".

Among its somewhat 600 international exhibitors, including global giant manufacturers Adidas, Custo Barcelona and Havaianas, online crafts retailer Etsy stands out. Small, independent productions are now in the same list and space as mass production key players, a sign that all those who underestimated them were wrong. The Eyelash Curler is back

When M. gave me this (thank you M!) it was the '80s all over again. The eyelash curler! I remember watching my mum use it back when shoulder pads were in. It's making a comeback so here's how it's done:

1. Remove makeup and make sure eyelashes are dry.

2. Open curler and place it parallel to the eyelashes, close to the root.

3. Make sure it's away from the skin and all lashes are in.
4. Close curler and gently squeeze, counting to 5.

(No blinking, pulling or shaky hands at this stage!)

5. Release and repeat step 4 for extra curling effect.

Tata! Now eyelashes should be beautifully curled.

Tips:

* It is important to apply mascara after and not before this process as it tends to make eyelashes sticky and fragile.

* For a long lasting effect I heat the curler for 10 seconds using my blow-dryer. Always test temperature before applying:)

la.trap farewell bazaar

la.trap is changing. The Berlin aesthetics boutique that first opened in November 2010 by Psarokokalo & Evrydiki will soon relocate in two new spaces. But first, it's bazaar-time: a farewell clearance is scheduled for this coming Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th, for the last time at Trivonianou 56, Mets.

For the past few months, la.trap had a special place in Athens' responsible shoppers' heart for its carefully selected hand-made, well-made, choice of merchandise. Clothes, jewellery, dolls for kids but adults too, home decor and needlework among others as well as the philosophy of supporting young designers, small productions and eco friendly products.

9th AXDW - day 2 recap

Day two was dedicated to newcomers, traditionally with awards for Best New Designer, Best Trendsetter and Best Catwalk. This season's judges were: Miltos - Athens-based Greek designer, Stephan Caras - Toronto-based Greek designer, Ben Demiri - director of showroom SIX LONDON in London, Sasa Charara - fashion editor of Greek Glamour magazine and Martha Papadatou - fashion stylist of Glamour too.

Empire by Alice Marie Hajipanayi, Best New Designer* Award winner: *Best New Designer gets to show at Sarajevo Fashion Week in May 2011.

jeAnS by Antonis Spathas - Best Catwalk* Award winner *Best Catwalk Award comes with a place at an MA course in Accessories Design and Editorial Stying at ESMOD, Paris, offered by IEK Akmi.

CorBo - Best Trendsetter by MTV Award* winner *Best Trendsetter gets to attend the TRL AWARDS in Florence, Italy and 'make statements on the red carpet' (sic from the release, not clear if they will participate or simply attend)

Other new designers that showed on the day include:
nadia Rapti & Teknio kerasioti, Vasia Kont,Agaliou Kostantina, Nikomia, and Konstantinos Mitrovgenis. For more images on New Designers' shows, visit this post. Patricia Munster snapped quite a selection.

Then Make-A-Wish Hellas special catwalk took place, featuring a custom-made dress by Sofia Kokosalaki and fulfiling the wish of a beautiful young lady. This one was all about the emotion and not the visual so use your imagination. I can tell you though that she was stunning and under the catwalk direction of Vicky Kaya -who's walked kilometres of catwalks- she did great.

Next up, last season's Best Catwalk Winner, Ourania_Kay: Show titled "Chapter 2//Illusions". If futuristic theme in black and sculpted volume is your thing, it was all about it. Complete with silver face make-up, turning the models into strict, walking mannequins. Complicated and skillful patterns, nothing you'd slap on in the morning and leave home. Has previously worked with Hussein Chalayan and I can somehow see that. More visual of this show, chez Patricia's.

Closing the evening, last season's Best Trendsetter Winners, Asel & Eleonora: Collection titled "Life Less Ordinary", with a less ordinary, feminine approach of steam-punk inspiration. Tartan check, emphasis on coats with cropped or vertical frill effect lapels, assymetry closer to elegance than structure. After all we are talking about mathematicians doing fashion. 9th AXDW - day 1 recap

It's the weekend following the end of the 9th Athens Xclusive Designers Week. How about browsing what designers had to show whilst recharging your batteries?

The first show had the signature of Myrto Dramountani. A Greek designer who studied and perfected her technique in New York before basing herself in London. A block colour, black dominated catwalk with flashes of red and plenty of laser-cut details. Evening and special occassion frocks. For more show photos visit this post by Patricia Munster.
Next up, a familiar AXDW name, Miltos. He's made it clear before, he likes nostalgic, past time outfits. This season his source of inspiration was the '50s. No wild takes on the forms but rather a tribute to classic shapes. Polka dots, pensil skirts and lots of cocktail dress material. For more show photos visit this post by Patricia Munster. Stelios Koudounaris on the other hand was 'so now' and consistent with his design identity. The first concerning the various occassions his clothes seem to be wearable at and the latter in regards to revisiting his best sellers and giving his fans what they've loved him for so far. Brownish-grey hues, black used to underline and define. Tech advanced fabrics, cotton, wool and cashmere. For more show photos visit this post by Patricia Munster.
Total black, sandy beige and white were the colours of choice for Chara Lebessi. There was short and there was long but no inbetween. Feminine straight lines, waist defining, emphasis on the back. Antoine Antoniadis' collection was the one to end day one. The Greek-French designer who lists Dita Von Teese and Mademoiselle Agnes among his parisian atelier customers, showed a well tailored set of clothes. Using a unique leather hand-woven fabric, lace and embroidery, he managed to make this sheer shade of green more interesting than ever. This is not the last we'll see of him these days as he's working on a special project for the 12th French Cinema Festival in Athens this April. Le flâneur

"Le flâneur" is Giorgis' Christodoulou single from the homonymous new album out now in Greece and Spain and about to be released in Argentina later this Summer.

The clip was directed by Dimitris Silvestros and has the essence of a short film. The lyrics are in French as written by Marthelene Gabon, music is by the artist Giorgis Christodoulou himself and in charge of nostalgic costume direction was Greek Cinema Academy Award Winner Vassilis Barbarigos.

Pleasantly surprised to see Mariangela, Nefeli and members of "Athens Lindy Hop" dancing away "Le flâneur".

Celebrity Skin's a/w 11 collection, DRAmaTIC-DISclipiNE, will be unveiled on the catwalk today, at 19:30. I am being informed that it's all ready and set. Here's some exclusive extra bits of info on what will take place:

- Apart from Eleonora Zouganeli, Ada Livitsanou, Isaia Matiaba, Penelope Anastasopoulou and Alexis Foukos who all star on the fashion film scheduled to open the show, Antigoni Psichrami and Alexandra Palaiologou complete the team of 7 celebrities to model on the catwalk.

- The soundtrack will be Daft Punk in remix.

- The models will march in especially created helmets, made by interior designer Andrea Manta.

- Models' feet will be walking on Dexim whereas the 7 celebrities will be wearing shoes by Room 69.

- The show consists of 32 outfits and will kick off with a men's.

Make A Wish @ 9th AXDW

Thirteen-year-old Despina's biggest wish was to be a model on the catwalk. 'Make A Wish' Hellas, the non-profit organization that aims to fulfil wishes for children with life threatening deseases, teamed up with AXDW about to grant her wish in a few hours.

AXDW and Sophia Kokosalaki worked especially on a project-contribution to Make A Wish, to be presented today at 20:00 during New Designers Awards. Despina will be walking on the catwalk by the hand of actor Orfeas Papadopoulos wearing a tailor made dress by Sophia Kokosalaki.

Phenomenon pictured well in this clip where indie band Tall Ships sports the new Label Lab menswear collection for House of Fraser. The new collection has been launched exclusively at selected House of Fraser stores in the UK and online.

The look is described as edgy, slim, distressed, and macabre, in a monochromatic colour palette featuring mainly greys, blacks and neutrals. Tall Ships were selected as the ideal faces and sound to project this as well as a "cool" menswear image.

Celebrity Skin - AXDW show & invites

Here's a peep from 'DRAmaTIC DISclipiNE', Celebrity Skin's a/w 11 collection to be presented at Athens Xclusive Designers Week shortly. Save the date: Monday, March 21st at 19.30.

It's going to be dramatic alright, with theatrical signature shapes revisited and applied on wool and synthetic fabrics, styled with saturated add-ons, all in disciplined shades of black and ash grey.

Scheduled to begin with a fashion film of approximately 6 minutes by Nectarios Karolos Papazacharias, starring 10 models as well as Eleonora Zouganeli, Ada Livitsanou, Isaia Matiaba, Penelope Anastasopoulou and Alexis Foukos. It's meant to be a visualization of Sinead O'Connor's song 'Troy', featuring people that pose a source of inspiration to designer duo Dimitris Strepkos and Eleni Barla for being "effortless style icons".

The 13th Athens Fashion Week (30/3 - 03/04) is scheduled to kick off with a charity catwalk featuring Dimitris Dassios collection a/w 2011. 'Dassios Arabesque' was successfully presented during Paris Fashion Week and next season it's expected to be stocked at some of the most distinct fashion spaces worldwide. All profits will go towards 'Make A Wish' Hellas, a non-profit organization that aims to fulfil as many wishes possible for children with life threatening deseases.

For how long have you been working as an illustrator and what makes fashion illustration so special to you?
I have been working as a illustrator and graphic designer for the past three years. Fashion Illustration won my heart at some point a couple of years ago. I guess it is my combined love for fashion and art that makes it so special to me.

What are the challenges in creating a fashion illustration?
The challenges vary depending on the project mostly. A general challenge would be to make your image communicate with a broader audience or to satisfy the client's vision. More specifically for fashion illustration, the challenges usually involve the interpretation of the clothes and models. Whatever they are, it's important to overcome these challenges, to free your mind, and only then can you create a striking image.

Good question! When it comes to illustration I believe it's the artists themselves that set what is hot and what is not. So hot would be anything that is creative and unique enough to stand out from the crowd of imagery around us. Look out on my website for some big collaborations later on this year. I also have an idea for an exciting project that I want to do - it has to do with a collection of accessories - but it's in its infancy at the moment.

Before I even finished typing 'Blahnik' in post below, the latest achievement of the world-famous shoe designer arrived: TOUS has turned Manolo Blahnik’s “Campari” model into a jewel. Considered a cult item due to its sensual lines and link to films, it's now available to wear as more places than an ordinary shoe, meant to be loaded with the pulse of New York. I guess if you are to wear a brand logo around your neck, why not wear its iconic model as a miniature instead.

Benetton is ditching plastic hangers for 100% biodegradable and recyclable eco-hangers. Switching to liquid wood hangers is expected to result in 600 tons less plastic waste. Good news if you are a runner - in any way. Nike presents three technologically advanced models, Nike Free TR Fit, Nike Free XT Quick Fit+ and Nike Free Everyday Fit+, designed to improve your performance. Apparently you can choose among three levels of elasticity Nike Free 3.0, Nike Free 5.0, and Nike Free Run+ which is pretty close to custom-made for your kind of running activity.

The video is brief but gets the message across: in Nike Free you could be flying. Haven't tried them on yet, but I will. It's Spring, I fancy flying.

Know-How has a new website and a sales clip. To celebrate its new home online, it's come up with a special collaboration with eshop buldoza.gr which gets to sell the clip's outfits exclusively for the web.

With the fantastic Spring weather we've had during the weekend, it feels quite appropriate to post more s/s 11 news. Greek brand Toi&moi is introducing part of its Sping collection in the 'Just IN' section of its e-fashion store and it looks like this:
Featured items' prices range between 55 and 65 euros and are all brand new. Half-price winter sales are still on too.

Toi&moi eshop is online since last season and could well be a case study as it openly based its launch publicity on fashion blogs, introducing the section 'For Fashionistas'. Numerous Greek fashion bloggers posed their own way featuring part of the brand's collection. The aftermath was great news and Toi&moi travelled through its eshop to many Greek islands -among other locations- such as Ikaria, Corfu, Rhodes and Chios.

Tell A Story a/w 11 dates announced: 25 - 27 February 2011, at Bios, Athens - Gazi. It kicks off on the 25th with an opening party on the spot, at 21:00, promising 'fashion happenings' for all. For the first two days the exhibition will be open for buyers only. Everyone else is welcome to visit on the 27th.

Another 'first' for Athens and 2011. Mad TV and Vodafone have joined forces into bringing Fashion and Music closer at a charity fundraising super-event. It's scheduled to take place this Wednesday, February 2nd at the Olympic Fencing Venue of Hellinikon. Eight of the most popular Greek fashion designers are going to pair with loud names of the local music industry at what is expected to be a spectacular show.
